LeetCode Practice That Transfers to Live Interviews
LeetCode volume without transfer is comfort. Live interviews grade a different sport: talking, planning, and recovering under eyes.
Transfer checklist
Practice counts only if most sessions include:
- Timed start (even 20–25 minutes)
- Narration (out loud or recorded)
- No solution tab until you have a plan or hit a deliberate timebox
- Three-case dry run before you stop
- Postmortem — one sentence on what broke (pattern gap vs freeze vs bug)
Weekly shape (example)
- 3× pattern drills (one family per day)
- 2× mixed timed mocks
- 1× freeze-only drill day (short)
Quality beats a 300-day streak of silent accepts.
Patterns vs problems
Memorizing 200 prompts fails when the prompt is paraphrased. Learn choosers: “sorted + target → two pointers / binary search,” “dependencies → topo,” “k best → heap.” Write your own chooser sheet.
Mock rules that hurt (in a good way)
- Shared doc only
- Interviewer can interrupt
- You must clarify before coding
- No mute thinking longer than ~20 seconds without a status update
Tools and integrity
Side-panel copilots and note aids can help practice feel closer to the live UI. Product example: Luna Interview. In a real employer interview, follow their rules. Winning means your narration holds when the tool is gone.
Measure transfer
Once a week, do a problem from a pattern you “know” but have not seen in 10 days, fully narrated. If you freeze or go silent, you had recognition, not retrieval. Adjust practice toward retrieval.
LeetCode is a gym. The interview is the game. Train the game conditions.
