How long should a pause in an interview answer be?

People treat silence as failure, so they fill it with um. The interviewer is not counting the silence against you at one second. They are waiting to hear whether the next words are a decision. The pause is a problem only when it keeps growing and you never come back with a sentence.

What gets measured

The page listens through the browser microphone and watches the volume. Quiet between two stretches of speech counts. The quiet before you start, and the quiet after you are done while you reach for Stop, does not count. That way the number is a pause inside the answer, not your reaction time to the button.

If you block the microphone, the timer and the transcript still work and the pause is reported as not measured. Speech recognition, on browsers that have it, is separate. You can get a transcript and still deny the analyser, or the other way around. Neither path uploads audio.

How to use the number

• One second before a tradeoff is a good pause. Leave it.
• Under a third of a second all the way through often means you never let a point land. The pace number will usually be high too.
• Over four seconds: add a bridge you can say without thinking. “The decision was.” “What I did next was.” Then the content.
• Do not fill a four-second hole with “that’s a great question” unless you mean it and you follow it immediately with the answer.

Practice the bridge on purpose. Answer the question, pause for a full second before the result, and check that the longest pause stays inside the two-and-a-half-second credit. Then try a stall and feel how different four seconds is. You want the first one to be familiar on the day, not the second.
