Tell me about yourself for an HR interview
HR is several jobs. Say which one: recruiting, HRBP, people ops, employee relations. Then one result an employee or a leader felt.
Build your answer
30-second version
About 33 seconds · 83 words
A short cut for a recruiter screen.
Stop after one result. A short screen does not need the second story.
60-second version
About 58 seconds · 144 words
The default. Present, then past, then future.
If they lean in, drop the second result and spend the time on how the first one happened. Leave duties from the job description out.
90-second version
About 81 seconds · 203 words
A longer cut when they ask you to walk through it.
They can interrupt. Go present, then proof, then why this role. When they ask, go from the headline number to the decision you made.
When you can say the minute without the page, practice it live with Luna. It hears the question and helps you keep a line. 24 hours free.
How to answer it for this role
"I love people" is the customer-service version of this answer, and it has the same problem. Name the work. A recruiter talks about roles closed and a process a hiring manager trusted. An HRBP talks about a team issue that got clearer. People ops talks about a workflow that got faster and fairer.
Confidentiality is part of competence. No employee names, no juicy cases. "I took a complaint from a first conversation to a documented outcome in nine days, and both sides knew the next step" is enough.
Why this company should mention the workforce: hourly, clinical, engineering, multi-state. Those change the job. Your last sentence should show you noticed.
What to emphasize
- The HR function, specifically.
- A result with time, quality, or retention.
- The workforce you are walking into.
What to leave out
- Gossip from a past investigation.
- A compliance acronym list with no story.
Sample 60-second answer
This is the sample loaded into the builder above. About 58 seconds, 144 words. Replace every fact with yours before you practice it.
I'm looking for a recruiter role. For the past 4 years I've worked as a technical recruiter on an engineering team. Before that, a few wins show how I work. I closed 28 engineering roles in a year with a 92% onsite-to-offer acceptance rate. I also cut time-to-schedule from 9 days to 4 by rewriting the intake. What I rely on is getting a clear bar from a hiring manager before I open a req. I'm chasing the recruiter role because this team is hiring engineers against a written bar, which is how I like to recruit. In the job I'd bring that strength to the team's current goal, and I'd report what moved. The pattern is the results, which is why I brought those instead of a list of titles. Each result started from a constraint, and I can say what I changed.
The 30-second cut is about 33 seconds. The longer cut is about 81 seconds. Both use the same facts in the same order. Read the longer structure guide if you want the timing rules in full: how long the answer should be.
Tips before you say it
- Say the 60-second version out loud before you edit it. A sentence that looks fine on the page often runs long or sounds like a memo.
- One number per win. “Improved the process” is a claim. “Cut hold time from 6 minutes to 2” is a result you can be questioned on.
- Stay in order: present, past, future. If you start with where you grew up, the interviewer is waiting for you to arrive.
- Leave a door open and then stop talking. The extra story you add in the silence is usually the one you did not prepare.
- Keep your part separate from the team’s. “We launched” collapses the first follow-up. “I cut the scope, engineering shipped it” survives.

Questions people ask
Should I mention HR certifications?
One clause if you have them. They do not replace a situation you handled.
What if I am a recruiter moving into an HRBP role?
Say the move. Use the closest proof: a hiring manager you coached, a process you fixed, a retention conversation you were part of. Do not imply you have run investigations if you have not.
How personal should the answer be?
Professional and warm is enough. Your own origin story can be one clause. The proof is the work.
