Behavioral question
Tell me about a time you worked on a team
Team questions go wrong when the answer is a tour of the org chart. They want your seat: what you owned, how you used someone else’s work, and what the group shipped that none of you would have shipped alone.

- This has a clear STAR shape. Only keep numbers you can defend out loud.
Which sentence is which
In April 2024 a four-person team was rebuilding the admin export that finance ran every Monday. I was responsible for the file format, while another engineer owned the query and a designer owned the empty states. I wrote a contract for the columns finance actually opened, and I met the query owner twice to drop fields nobody used. I then tested the file against the last 12 Monday runs before we launched. I shared the column contract in the team channel so the query owner and the designer were looking at the same list. The export had been failing about 8 mornings a month. The result was Monday failures down from 8 a month to 1, and finance stopped keeping a side spreadsheet. The export finished in 4 minutes instead of 25.
Why this example holds up
You can point at the other seats without turning the story into “we.” The contract and the 12-run test are yours. The result belongs to the team and you say so with a number.
How to answer “Tell me about a time you worked on a team” with STAR
- Situation. Set the scene in one or two sentences: when it was and what was already wrong. For example: In April 2024 a four-person team was rebuilding the admin export that finance ran every Monday.
- Task. Say what you personally owned. For example: I was responsible for the file format, while another engineer owned the query and a designer owned the empty states.
- Action. Say what you did, in order, with I. For example: I wrote a contract for the columns finance actually opened, and I met the query owner twice to drop fields nobody used.
- Result. End on the change, with a number you can defend. For example: The export had been failing about 8 mornings a month.
Mistakes on this question
- A list of teammates and no artifact you produced.
- “We” from the first sentence to the last, so your part is invisible.
- A team story with no friction. They asked about a team because teams are where work gets stuck.
How to practice it
Say each teammate’s job in five words, then do not say their names again. The rest of the minute is your work and the shared number.
FAQ
Should I pick a team I led?
Only if they asked for leadership. For a teamwork question, a story where you depended on someone else is often clearer.
What if my best team story is from school?
Use it if the work was real and you remember the result. A class project with a grade and no user is thinner than a job story.
